As a new mom, you’ll spend much time in the bathroom. Whether it’s due to postpartum bladder issues, postpartum bleeding, or just catching your breath from the whirlwind of motherhood, it’s crucial to have a few essential items on hand to make your postpartum bathroom trips more comfortable. As a mom who had two vaginal births, I know having everything ready for easy access when you come home from the hospital is essential. Please keep reading for our ultimate postpartum bathroom basket guide.
When Should I put together my Postpartum Bathroom Basket?
Postpartum recovery is a unique experience for every mother, and it can be emotionally and physically demanding. A postpartum essentials basket is an often overlooked but essential item every new mom should assemble in advance to help with her healing journey. It’s a postpartum care kit and should include soothing and health-promoting items.
Ideally, you’ll want to create your postpartum baskets as early as your third trimester so you’ll be ready as soon as labor begins. If you’re in the phase of packing your hospital bag, you should be making your baskets too. Depending on the size of your home, I recommend making 1-2 baskets for different bathrooms in your home. That way, you’re not stuck going up and down stairs more often than needed after a vaginal birth.
What Should I Have in My Postpartum Bathroom Basket?
The items you should include in your postpartum kit will depend on what makes you feel most comfortable. Here are some suggestions, but feel free to tailor them to your needs:
- Premade Kit, OR:
- Disposable underwear
- Menstrual pads
- Peri bottle
- Perineal healing foam
- Perineal ice packs
- Bathroom baskets
- Optional additions: pain relief, witch hazel pads, hemorrhoid cream, stool softener

The Best Disposable Underwear for Postpartum
Postpartum recovery can be daunting and intimidating, but having the right products ready can make all the difference. Disposable mesh underwear is not only practical but also hygienic as you recover. When making your postpartum bathroom basket, include disposable underwear that offers coverage and comfort while allowing maximum breathability. It will help keep you from making unnecessary trips to the bathroom and provide an extra layer of protection in case of any leakage during the healing process. So when making your postpartum bathroom basket, look for disposable underwear that delivers maximum comfort with optimal convenience. I used these from amazon.
The Best Menstrual Pads for Postpartum
A postpartum pad should be generously sized, highly absorbent yet comfortable, and breathable, ideal for adjusting post-birth changes. Additionally, postpartum pads should be designed explicitly with leak protection to give peace of mind as you adjust to your post-birth body. With careful consideration of postpartum essentials, new moms can confidently settle into their postnatal routines.
The Best Peri Bottle
Regarding the peri bottle, you don’t need just any product—you need the best. Look for a squirt bottle with a long spout that ensures all areas of your most sensitive regions get adequately cleaned. Additionally, look for an ergonomic design that is comfortable to hold and use post-birth. I used this one and this more expensive one in each of my baskets, and they are about the same!
Which Perineal foam should you use after Vaginal Delivery?
You’ll want an excellent postpartum perineal foam after a vaginal delivery. It should be sweet-smelling, gentle on the skin, and preferably made with natural ingredients that support postpartum healing. Perineal foams come in various forms and fragrances, so select one you feel comfortable regularly using until postpartum recovery is complete. Also, I like this foam because it has witch hazel and no harsh chemicals.
What are Perineal Ice Packs?
Perineal ice packs are essential postpartum recovery items often found in a postpartum bathroom basket. They are specially-shaped gel packs that provide a cooling relief to the perineum—the area between the vagina and the rectum—after vaginal birth. Most will conform to the shape of your body, providing comfortable relief while reducing swelling and helping to quell post-operative pain. The cold felt from the perineal ice pack can be beneficial. It numbs soreness, reduces post-episiotomy bleeding, decreases post-labor muscle spasms, and helps relieve postpartum vaginal discomfort or burning sensations. I used and was very happy with this 24-pack.
