Have you ever felt that inner fear that if someone else succeeds it will put you at a disadvantage? Well, that is a scarcity mindset rearing its ugly head. It happens to all of us at times, but today, I’ll give you some tips to get out of a scarcity mindset and into an abundance mindset. Ready? Let’s go!
First, let’s define scarcity and abundance mindset. A scarcity mindset is a fear that there isn’t enough to go around and that others’ successes will be at the cost of our own. It leads to feelings of sadness and jealousy. The opposite, an abundance mindset, is when you believe there is more than enough to go around. Those in this mindset feel happy about the success of others.
Here are tips for embracing an abundance mindset:
- Practice gratitude throughout the day. Try this tip: throughout the day, stop what you’re doing, close your eyes, take three deep breathes, and bring to mind 1-3 things you are grateful for in your life. You can write them down if you’d like. If it helps, keep them written down and insight somewhere (like a post-it note on your desk)
- Share your skills with others or help others get ahead. When someone else asks you to teach them something you know well, then help them! It feels so good to help others. Another example, say a coworker you enjoyed working with is applying for other jobs, offer up a recommendation. Find ways to pay it forward! You know what they say about karma…
- If you catch yourself feeling jealous (maybe when scrolling social), stop and mentally think of a quick affirmation wishing that person continued success. This one is hard, but it works!
