It seems that a self critical voice can rear its ugly head everyone once and a while and derail our well-earned confidence. Let’s discuss ways to diminish the self-critical voice. First off, let’s recognize that listening to that voice is NOT helping us achieve goals or stay motivated. In fact, if left unchecked, it’s damn near destructive.
Here are 3 quick steps to diminish the critical inner voice:
- Acknowledge the voice – recognizing it is the first step to fixing it. With practice, you’ll be able to catch it quickly.
- Remind yourself of your strength and capabilities – speak to yourself,
out-loud if necessary, about your strength and capabilities. - Switch the narrative. I like to think about what I would say to a friend if I caught them saying the same negative things about themselves. For example: replace “I’ll never get in shape” with something like “I may struggle at times, but I am moving every day and working towards my fitness goals.”
Take a moment to reflect on this: What do you do to snap out of it when you catch yourself listening to your inner critic? We have all been there. The key is to move on and improve a little each day.
